Bush Vows `Ideology of Hope' Will Triumph in Global Terror War
July 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush said today's bombings in London show ``the war on terror goes on,'' and he and other world leaders are resolved to win it.
``The ideology of hope`` will triumph over ``the ideology of hate,'' Bush told reporters at the summit of the Group of Eight industrial countries in Scotland.
Bush said he instructed officials at the Department of Homeland Security to be in touch with local and state officials in the U.S. and ``to be extra vigilant as our folks start heading to work.'' He attributed the attacks to ``those who have got such evil their hearts that they will take the lives of innocent folks.''
Terrorists set off bombs today during morning rush hour across London's subway system in the financial district and on a bus in the center of the capital, killing at least eight people and shutting down all public transportation.
Bush said he expressed America's condolences to British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who returned to London today. Bush has no plans to cut short his stay at a summit, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said earlier today.
``We will not yield to the terrorists,'' Bush said. ``We will find them, we will bring them to justice and at the same time we will spread an ideology of hope and compassion that will overwhelm their ideology of hate.''
The meeting at the Gleneagles golf resort was briefly suspended after reports of the explosions reached the leaders.
Bush is scheduled to return tomorrow to Washington from Gleneagles. He and Blair had been giving a press conference at the Scottish golf resort just before the explosions were reported.
